Net benefits to Canada went unquestioned in big forestry buyouts – Business News

The Catalyst paper mill in Powell River was indefinitely shut down not long after Paper Excellence purchased it.

Earlier this year, Paper Excellence capped off an unprecedented series of multibillion-dollar buyouts to become the largest forestry company in Canada.

Members of Parliament investigating the company’s business ties and corporate structure learned Friday that Industry Canada did not conduct a net benefit analysis to see if the company’s recent US$3-billion purchase of Domtar and US$2.7-billion buyout of Resolute Forest Products were in the economic interests of Canadians.

Caviar & Bananas opens second downtown Charleston location > Charleston Business Journal

The gourmet café and market Caviar & Bananas has opened a second Charleston location.

The Ashley Avenue spot features the same menu items, such as sandwiches, salads and a wide selection of ingredients in the market, as the original George Street location, according to a news release.

The new location at 170 Ashley Ave., across from the Medical University of South Carolina campus, replaces the former Halo Café. The space totals about 2,700 square feet. Jeremy Busse and his company, Tru2Word General Contracting, was at the helm for the project.

Canada’s economy grew by more than expected in the first quarter, upping the odds of the rate hike next week

The Canadian economy grew at an annualized rate of 3.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2023, Statistics Canada reported Wednesday.

The latest data shows growth beating out the federal agency’s own forecast of 2.5 per cent for the quarter. A preliminary estimate suggests the economy grew by 0.2 per cent in April, after remaining flat in March.

The ongoing resilience in the economy will likely spur discussions of a potential rate hike, as the Bank of Canada is expected to make its next interest rate announcement next week.

Toronto housing market sees biggest price gain since peak

The spring surge in Toronto house prices accelerated again in May, providing another sign of persistent inflation in parts of the Canadian economy before a key central bank interest rate decision next week.

The benchmark price of a home in Canada’s largest city increased 3.2 per cent last month to $1.14 million on a seasonally adjusted basis, the third straight monthly increase and the biggest since the market peaked in February 2022, according to data released Friday from the Toronto Regional Real Estate Board.

US added 339,000 jobs last month, far more than expected

The nation’s employers stepped up their hiring in May, adding a robust 339,000 jobs, well above expectations and evidence of strength in an economy that the Federal Reserve is desperately trying to cool.

Friday’s report from the government showed that the unemployment rate rose to 3.7 per cent, from a five-decade low of 3.4 per cent in April.
