Biden’s speech to address the successes Americans missed [Video]

President Joe Biden is set to devote significant portions of Tuesday night’s speech not to any new initiatives, but to remind Americans of his accomplishments in the last two years and dusting off his ‘implementer-in-chief’ bona fides for programs that are rolling out .

The president has good reason for this approach. Biden has signed more significant new laws compared to other presidents going back decades, but those achievements have not broken through to the public consciousness.

A recent Washington Post/ABC poll found that 62% of respondents (and 66% of independents) felt he had accomplished “not very much” or “little

A shortage of pilots is making travel chaos in Canada even worse

From pandemic-related travel restrictions to extreme weather events, Canada’s travel industry has navigated an unprecedented amount of uncertainty of late. And now, just as demand for travel has returned to its 2019 level, airlines are navigating their next patch of turbulence: a lack of qualified pilots.

According to Transport Canada, in a typical pre-pandemic year, roughly 1,100 pilot licenses were issued. When complemented by foreign-trained pilots, that was generally more than enough to satisfy the needs of carriers as large as WestJet and Air Canada, all the way down to regional, charter and cargo airlines.

But as demand for flying

Tech stocks extend post-Fed rally, Dow futures lag

US stocks finished mixed Thursday, highlighted by a vault upward by tech stocks following the Federal Reserve’s latest interest rate hike and ahead of another batch of earnings from the industry’s biggest players.

The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) soared by more than 3% at the close. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) added 1.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) lagged, dipping 0.1%.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note ticked down to 3.398% Thursday. The dollar index increased 0.5% to $101.70.

The moves continued a Wall Street rally that began Wednesday following the Federal Reserve’s highly anticipated rate

‘Is it actual weed?’ First weekend of recreational pot sales open in Missouri to joy and exuberance.

st. LOUIS — Steve Campbell was ready with a joke.

Campbell was the first person at the Good Day Farm marijuana dispensary in the Central West End on the first day recreational-use marijuana was sold in Missouri.

He walked through the door to applause from the staff. But Campbell, 67, had a confused look on his face. “This isn’t St. Louis Bread Co.?” he asked.

“I did not believe this day would ever come,” Campbell said later. “I went back a long way, when it was very illegal and very scary, and people went to jail for a couple of

Article content

TORONTO — Nestle Canada’s decision to pull its pizza and frozen meals from Canada over the next six months could leave a gap in supermarket freezers, a food expert says.

The four brands that will no longer be sold in the freezer aisle at Canadian grocery stores are Delissio, Stouffer’s, Lean Cuisine and Life Cuisine.

Nestle said it would work with its retail partners to facilitate the exit of these products from stores.

FedEx Freight announces additional furloughs

FedEx Freight will furlough additional workers, the company confirmed Friday, a continuation of several months of cost-cutting measures by the logistics giant.

“In response to business conditions continuing to impact volumes, FedEx Freight is enacting another temporary furlough in some US markets to align our workforce with operational requirements,” the company said.

Some employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other markets and the furloughed employees will maintain health benefits and be provided other financial incentives, the company said. While the company did not say how many will be furloughed, it said the furlough period was “just under

US rates to keep rising as the Federal Reserve says a Canadian-style pause could be risky

The world’s most powerful central banker, Jerome Powell, has decided against following Canada’s lead and will not commit to taking a break in raising interest rates.

While specifically noting the Bank of Canada’s rate hike pause a week ago, US Federal Reserve chair Powell refused to echo Canadian central bank governor Tiff Macklem’s optimism that he had inflation on the run.

“I think it would be premature, it would be very premature, to declare victory,” said Powell, at the Fed’s monetary policy news conference on Wednesday.

In many ways, Powell’s outlook on the economy was similar to Macklem’s. In some
