With Banks Facing Threats, Where Should a Small Business Keep Large Deposits?

Experts say businesses have a lot of options for storing their money safely—and they don’t necessarily involve stashing their cash with “too-big-to-fail” megabanks.

The failures of three medium-sized banks this spring rattled small business owners, who often had deposits in excess of the $250,000 that’s protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Almost two-thirds of small businesses keep their money in small or regional banks, according to an April survey by the National Federation of Independent Businesses. 250K Canadian small businesses risk closure as CEBA deadline looms

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) is sounding the alarm as the deadline for repaying Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) loans gets closer.

CEBA was a financial assistance program introduced during the pandemic to help small businesses stay afloat with loans of up to $60,000. The deadline for paying off this loan is December 31, 2023.

“For eligible CEBA borrowers in good standing, repaying the balance of the loan on or before December 31, 2023, will result in loan forgiveness of up to 33% (up to $20,000),” reads the CEBA website.

A Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan business is one of 15 finalists in Canada Post’s Tales of Triumph contest.

NS wildfires: Small businesses can get $2,500 grant

Small businesses in communities under mandatory evacuation orders in Nova Scotia will receive a one-time $2,500 grant from the provincial government.

Premier Tim Houston announced the support, known as the Small Business Wildfire Relief Program, on Friday.

“These wildfires are unprecedented, and the uncertainty they bring is being felt throughout entire communities, including businesses. This funding is one thing we can do to help people experiencing financial stress,” said Premier Houston in a news release. “We will also work with the business community to assess ongoing impacts as our wildfire response continues.”
