Lawyers spar over whether Elon Musk misled investors with his tweets

Opening arguments kicked off Wednesday in a trial that was pitting Tesla against shareholders accusing the company of misleading them over a tweet by Elon Musk stating funding had been “secured” to take the electric car company private.

A lawyer for Tesla investors told a nine-person jury that Musk “lied” when he sent the Aug. 7, 2018 tweet, costing investors money while its share price fluctuated as Wall Street digested the information. Ultimately, the company remained publicly traded.

“Millions of dollars were lost when his lies were exposed,” said attorney Nicholas Porritt, who represents the investors.

List of states banning TikTok grows – Business News

Wisconsin and North Carolina have joined at least 22 other states in banning the popular social media app TikTok on state-owned devices, including Mississippi, Indiana, Louisiana and South Dakota.

Congress also recently banned TikTok from most US government-issued devices over bipartisan concerns about security.

TikTok is owned by ByteDance, a Chinese company that moved its headquarters to Singapore in 2020. It has been targeted by critics who say the Chinese government could access user data, such as browsing history and location. US armed forces also have prohibited the app on military devices.

Canada’s economy added 104,000 jobs in December, blowing well past expectations

The Canadian labor market ended the year on a strong note as the economy added a whopping 104,000 jobs in December, showing no signs of the slowdown many economists have been anticipating.

Statistics Canada reported Friday that the unemployment rate fell slightly to 5.0 per cent last month. This marks the third decline in the unemployment rate in the fourth month, edging it closer to the record low of 4.9 per cent reached in June and July.

In its latest labor force survey, the federal agency says the rise in employment was driven by an increase in full-time work.
