Ohio filed a lawsuit against railroad Norfolk Southern to make sure it pays for the cleanup and environmental damage caused by a fiery train derailment on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border last month, the state’s attorney general said Tuesday.

The federal lawsuit also seeks to force the company to pay for groundwater and soil monitoring in years to come and economic losses in the village of East Palestine and surrounding areas, said Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost.

Stocks rallied on Thursday with the Dow leading markets higher as a result from Salesforce (CRM) lifted the index, and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq shook off early losses to finish on the green.

Business insolvencies up 55% in January compared to 2022

Business insolvencies in January were 55.4 per cent higher than last year, according to new data by the Office of the Superintendent of Bankruptcy.

The federal insolvency regulator on March 1 released its January 2023 statistics on insolvency in Canada, reporting an annual increase of 33.7 per cent in combined business and consumer insolvencies over the same month in 2022.

Consumer insolvencies were up 33 per cent in the same period, it said.
