BC wood manufacturers to get bigger cut of the cut – Business News

Wood manufacturers in B.C. that have little or no Crown tenure will get increased access to logs through BC Timber Sales.

BC Forests Minister Bruce Ralston Tuesday announced a new program – the BC Timber Sales (BCTS) Value-Added Manufacturing Program – that will set aside 10% of BC Timber sales for qualifying businesses.

It will not be open to conventional lumber producers. Only higher value-added manufacturers will qualify. That includes veneer and plywood, engineered wood products, shakes and shingles, log home manufacturing, decking and flooring.

Relief for homebuyers in 2023? Mortgage rates at lowest levels since September

A dip in mortgage interest rates is spurring demand from homebuyers, according to a new report from the Mortgage Bankers Association, or MBA.

Mortgage applications last week jumped 28% from the week prior, according to seasonally adjusted data. The MBA’s refinance index also spiked 34% from the previous week.

“As we enter the beginning of the spring buying season, lower mortgage rates and more homes on the market will help affordability for first-time homebuyers,” MBA chief economist and senior vice president Mike Fratantoni said in a Wednesday statement.

Canada’s economy added 104,000 jobs in December, blowing well past expectations

The Canadian labor market ended the year on a strong note as the economy added a whopping 104,000 jobs in December, showing no signs of the slowdown many economists have been anticipating.

Statistics Canada reported Friday that the unemployment rate fell slightly to 5.0 per cent last month. This marks the third decline in the unemployment rate in the fourth month, edging it closer to the record low of 4.9 per cent reached in June and July.

Elon Musk threatens legal action, suspends Twitter account that tracks his jet

Twitter on Wednesday suspended accounts that track the locations of private airplanes, including one that tracked CEO Elon Musk’s jet, which was reinstated by the evening.

Musk tweeted that the accounts violated Twitter’s “doxxing” rules, meaning they revealed nonpublic personal information.

The account, @ElonJet, which had amassed more than half a million followers, was listed Wednesday morning as suspended for having violated unspecified Twitter rules. Later in the day, Twitter accounts tracking the jets of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos were also suspended.

The Musk-tracking account was created by Jack Sweeney, 20, a Florida college student.
