Japan Finance Minister Warns of Severe Finances as BOJ Struggles to Contain Yields

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s finances are becoming increasingly precarious, Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki warned on Monday, just as markets test whether the central bank can keep interest rates ultra-low, allowing the government to service its debt.

Japan’s public debt is more than double its annual economic output, by far the heaviest burden in the industrialized world.

The government has been helped by near-zero bond yields, but bond investors have recently sought to break the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) 0.5% cap on the 10-year bond yield, as inflation runs at 41-year highs, double the central the bank’s 2% target.

Stock futures stumble after in-line inflation print

US stocks ended the day lower Thursday as investors dissected the latest batch of economic data, more Fedspeak, and the start of earnings season from corporate tech giants.

The S&P 500 (^GSPC) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) both fell nearly 0.8%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) declined nearly 1.0%.

Bond prices ticked down. The yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note rose to 3.397% from 3.368% earlier this morning. The dollar index has declined over 10% after trading at its 20-year high in late September, per Bespoke Investment Group’s data.

Recently Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s former star finance minister, Bill Morneau, authored a book titled “Where To From Here, A Path to Canadian Prosperity”.

As is common when promoting a new book, Morneau has conducted several media interviews. What is less common is Morneau leveled some heavy and serious criticism against Trudeau and his office.

Morneau makes several allegations along a theme suggesting Trudeau often ignores or rejects “carefully considered calculations” for announcements that sound good or

A net-zero world could generate $10.3 trillion by 2050, new report finds

The green transition could spur huge economic gains as the world looks to curb climate change, a new report finds.

A study from Oxford Economics and Arup estimated that green industries could add $10.3 trillion to the world’s economy — or 5.2% of global GDP — by 2050 under a net-zero scenario.

The report made the case that governments and businesses, under increasing pressure from costly climate-related weather events, may begin to see a rapid transition away from fossil fuels as a net positive as well as a way to avoid climate disruptions.

“Fear is a compelling reason to act
