Montgomery County schools consider a financial literacy graduation requirement

Comments

The Montgomery County school board is considering requiring a financial literacy course to graduate, joining a growing number of school systems intent on providing students with skills to make better money decisions later in life.

The school system currently offers lessons in elective courses including personal finance and financial mathematics.

In Maryland, there is no statewide financial literacy graduation requirement, but the state has required since 2011 that school systems introduce some method of financial literacy instruction to third- to 12th-graders — whether it is embedded in a math class or other course, or as

‘ESG’ in US finance job titles comes with a 20% pay premium

By Isla Binnie

NEW YORK (Reuters) – US-based bankers and money managers whose job titles include “ESG” or “sustainability” earn on average around 20% higher base salaries than colleagues of the same seniority without those labels, according to analysis of salary data shared with Reuters.

More than $30 trillion in capital has been committed to environmental, social and corporate governance-related investments as the world looks to curb greenhouse gas emissions and companies face pressure on issues such as workplace diversity and social justice.

This has sparked a scramble to find bankers and asset managers for these roles, leading to higher

While most of us were online shopping and ordering takeout during the pandemic, high school student Noah Booth wrote a book.

It’s called A Rich Future: Essential Financial Concepts for Youth. Did I lose you there? Clever book-naming may not be Mr. Booth’s strength, but he’s a pro at book-writing. Think of this volume as a definitive answer to a question I get a lot: Can you recommend a personal finance

Team Adams ordered to cough up nearly $20k in campaign finance-related fines

Major Adams’ inaugural committee got socked Monday with $19,600 in fines for violations it committed immediately before and after his Jan. 1, 2022 swearing in, according to a ruling from the city’s Campaign Finance Board.

At a Monday morning hearing, the board found that Adams’ inauguration team ran afoul of three campaign finance rules that apply to entities that handle transitions and inaugurations.

One of the violations — for failing to respond to the board’s information requests and for providing late responses to requests — carries the largest fine of the three and will cost Adams’ inauguration committee $14,400, according

Are banks the new meme stocks?

Amateur trader Matt Kohrs said he lost nearly $30,000 betting on the recovery of First Republic, a bank seized by regulators last Monday. Burnt by the trade, the 28-year-old decided it made more sense to bet that regional lenders would decline.

He took short positions in PacWest (PACW), Western Alliance (WAL), Zions (ZION) and SPDR S&P Regional Banking ETF (KRE), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the performance of regional banks.

Thus so far his unrealized gains are more than $17,000, according to screenshots of his positions shared with Yahoo Finance on Friday, after investors pushed down the stocks of numerous
