UPS strike threat presents challenges to some local businesses, opportunity for others

Local business owners said they were concerned about the impact a UPS strike could have on their shipments, and with only days left for negotiators to avoid a nationwide strike, some owners are preparing.

Businesses reliant on shipping products for customers say they hope the Atlanta-based package delivery giant and the Teamsters union reach a deal soon. The union represents 340,000 UPS workers — more than half the company’s workforce — in the largest private-sector contract in North America.

WestJet shutting down discount airline Swoop

WestJet is shutting down its budget airline, Swoop.

The company made the announcement in a news release Friday, noting that the ratification of its recent deal with its pilots allows it to integrate all of its staff at various airlines into a single banner.

“As negotiated in the collective agreement, the WestJet Group will now begin integration efforts of its ultra-low-cost airline, Swoop,” the airline said.

Petro-Canada payment problems continue, but the company says it’s ‘making progress’ on fixing

Petro-Canada says the nearly weeklong problems that customers have experienced with things like payment and loyalty programs at the gas station chain are ongoing, but it is making progress on solving them.

Problems at the company started about a week ago, when on Friday reports suggested that parent company Suncor had been hacked. Over the weekend, Suncor acknowledged it had experienced a “cybersecurity incident” and stressed that while it was confident that no customer or employee data had been stolen, “some transactions with customers and suppliers may be impacted.”

Nigel Farage fell below the financial threshold required to hold an account at Coutts, the prestigious private bank for the wealthy, the BBC has been told.

It is understood that he was afterward offered a standard account at NatWest which owns Coutts.

Mr Farage says he believes his account is being shut down for political reasons and he has been turned down by nine other lenders after trying elsewhere.

But people familiar with Coutts’ move said it was a “commercial” decision.

“The criteria for holding a Coutts account are clear from the bank’s website,” they told the BBC.

New investigation targets company executives

Connecticut’s attorney general has announced an investigation into Hyundai and Kia concerning the companies’ failure to equip millions of their vehicles with modern anti-theft technology.

In a press release Tuesday, Attorney General William Tong accused the Korean automakers of ignoring repeated calls to install the hardware, known as an engine immobilizer. The technology can prevent vehicles from being hot-wired and stolen.
