Fukushima nuclear plant water release raises worries for businesses

IWAKI, Japan –

Beach season has started across Japan, which means seafood for holiday makers and good times for business owners. But in Fukushima, that may end soon.

Within weeks, the tsunami-hit Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is expected to start releasing treated radioactive wastewater into the sea, a highly contested plan still facing fierce protests in and outside Japan.

Residents worry that the water discharge, 12 years after the nuclear disaster, could deal another set back to Fukushima’s image and hurt their businesses and livelihoods.

“Without a healthy ocean, I cannot make a living.” said Yukinaga Suzuki, a 70-year-old

UPS strike threat presents challenges to some local businesses, opportunity for others

Local business owners said they were concerned about the impact a UPS strike could have on their shipments, and with only days left for negotiators to avoid a nationwide strike, some owners are preparing.

Businesses reliant on shipping products for customers say they hope the Atlanta-based package delivery giant and the Teamsters union reach a deal soon. The union represents 340,000 UPS workers — more than half the company’s workforce — in the largest private-sector contract in North America.

The union said Wednesday it would resume negotiations with UPS next week after the company reached out to resume talks. The

Hunter Biden’s former business partner was willing to go before a grand jury. He never got the chance.

A former business partner of Hunter and James Bidenwho worked directly with them on a 2017 China energy deal, was never asked to testify to a Delaware grand jury investigating Hunter Biden, two sources familiar with the discussions tell CBS News.

Tony Bobulinski, the former business partner, was open to testifying, and his attorney reached out to the office of Delaware US Attorney David Weiss. Weiss did not return their calls, the sources said. Weiss’ decision not to bring Bobulinski is the latest indication that prosecutors investigating Hunter Biden may have avoided investigating allegations about his father, President Joe

Local news is good for business | Commentary

It’s no secret that recently years have been tough on small businesses and on newspapers. A bipartisan bill, the Community News & Small Business Support Act, that has been introduced in Congress would offer relief to both newspapers and local businesses.

For too many newspapers help can’t come soon enough.

Economic challenges have resulted in too many communities seeing their local newspapers being forced to lay off staff, cut back on publication days or — worse yet — close. On average, two newspapers are closing each week. That hurts local businesses and residents in the long (and short) run. However,

China’s economy misses growth forecasts, raising the odds of more support for its edged recovery – Business News

Photo: The Canadian Press

China’s economic growth missed forecasts in the second quarter of the year, adding to worries over surging youth unemployment and a weak property sector and raising the likelihood the government will double down on support for the faltering post COVID-19 recovery.

Unemployment of youths aged 16 to 24 rose to a record 21.3% in June, up from 20.8% the month before.
