Experts say Canada’s plan to increase immigration may ease some pressures in the labor market, but bigger changes are needed to ensure new permanent residents are matched with the jobs that most need filling.

With the unemployment rate at historic lows, many companies are “starved” for workers, and new immigrants will help fill some of the need, said Ravi Jain, principal at Jain Immigration Law and co-founder of the Canadian Immigration Lawyers Association.

FedEx Freight announces additional furloughs

FedEx Freight will furlough additional workers, the company confirmed Friday, a continuation of several months of cost-cutting measures by the logistics giant.

“In response to business conditions continuing to impact volumes, FedEx Freight is enacting another temporary furlough in some US markets to align our workforce with operational requirements,” the company said.

Some employees will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other markets and the furloughed employees will maintain health benefits and be provided other financial incentives, the company said. Wood manufacturers in B.C. that have little or no Crown tenure will get increased access to logs through BC Timber Sales.

BC Forests Minister Bruce Ralston Tuesday announced a new program – the BC Timber Sales (BCTS) Value-Added Manufacturing Program – that will set aside 10% of BC Timber sales for qualifying businesses.

It will not be open to conventional lumber producers. Only higher value-added manufacturers will qualify. That includes veneer and plywood, engineered wood products, shakes and shingles, log home manufacturing, decking and flooring.
