A large number of small businesses remain pessimistic and in a precarious financial position in February

Toronto, February 23, 2023 — Small business confidence remained steady in February, with a half point increase to 51.7 on the long-term optimism index, but still at its historical lowest outside of recessions, according to the latest Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) Business Barometer®.

“While confidence levels have improved slightly, they’re still below pre-pandemic levels. In fact, even during the pandemic, we’ve seen better times,” said CFIB Chief Economist and Vice-President of Research Simon Gaudreault. “The confidence levels didn’t get worse this month but didn’t improve significantly either, suggesting a slow recovery and uncertainty around the economy. Many businesses

FUTURE OF WORK: Remote work is more of a curse than a blessing for small businesses in Toronto | News

A shift in employment trends has seen foot traffic and subsequent sales drop in the downtown core’s local businesses, and even if outlying residential areas like Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough are able to scrape off some of that business, some of it just disappears, experts say, striking a heavy blow as small businesses grapple with COVID-19-accrued debt.

The spring 2022 survey of remote work from the Environics Institute’s latest wave of research on the topic found that almost half of employed Canadians are working from home at least some of the time.

It also found that 76 per cent

Small-business owners say federal government is failing to meet their needs: survey

More than two-thirds of small-business owners said in a Goldman Sachs survey that the federal government is failing to meet their needs.

The survey, published on Sunday, found that 70 percent of small-business owners surveyed gave the federal government a C grade or below on the effectiveness of the programs, services and tax credits available to them.

Only 16 percent gave the federal government a B or higher.

Eighty-five percent of small-business owners surveyed also gave the federal government a grade C or below for the job it does when it comes to marketing and communicating about the programs, services

Small business confidence remains low

Retail has reported the lowest level of long-term optimism among industries (41.2) – the seventh month in a row that the index has fallen below 50. A recent CFIB study found that given these opinions, 94% of small firms want the federal government to address rising costs when parliament reconvenes on Monday.

“We’re hearing from members who are concerned about their future and where the economy is headed as they continue to deal with pandemic debt, increasing taxes, inflation and labor shortages,” said Corinne Pohlmann, Senior Vice-President of National Affairs at CFIB .

Reducing the total tax burden (92%), ensuring

(Bloomberg) — Walmart Inc., which became the world’s largest retailer by serving everyday shoppers, is now targeting a larger share of business customers with a website aimed at small and midsize companies.

Series of Pointe-Saint-Charles break-ins has small business owners worried

A series of smash-and-grab robberies has enraged small business owners in Montreal’s Pointe-Sainte-Charles neighborhood.

The break-ins reached a peak in recent weeks on a stretch of Wellington Street in the Sud-Ouest borough, where the windows of at least five shops and restaurants have been broken so far this year.

On Wednesday morning, Jermaine Wallace, the owner of Boom J’s, a popular Jamaican restaurant, woke up to the news that his glass door had been shattered overnight.

“I was in shock,” he said. “It was like a punch in the stomach because this is my place. I’ve been here for over

Canada faces mass exodus of small business owners

Most business owners (75%) cite retirement as the reason for leaving their business, while a smaller number plan to leave because of stress, to step back from their responsibilities as an owner, or to move to another business venture, the report found.

When it comes to how owners intend to exit their businesses, the most common approach is to sell to an unrelated buyer (49%), while 24% will sell to a family member and 23% to their employees.

The CFIB and other business advocates had long called for tax changes to remove a disincentive to business owners passing on businesses
