Small business group wants NS to look beyond minimum wage hikes to address poverty

A group representing small businesses is pushing the Nova Scotia government to look beyond minimum wage hikes to address poverty.

“If you want to fix poverty, there’s a whole series of things that [the] government can work on. You could work on the welfare levels,” Louis-Philippe Gauthier of the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses told a provincial legislative committee on human resources.

The committee met Tuesday at the Nova Scotia legislature to hear from the public and private sectors on labor shortages and the minimum wage.

“Everybody goes back to this default mentality that minimum wage will fix everything,” Gauthier

A local small business owner’s transition from working in finance to being her own boss

An Austin small business owner decided to quit her corporate job and open up learning centers to honor her late sister who was a teacher.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Sylvan Learning Center has been in the Brodie Oaks Shopping Center for more than 30 years. But in December 2020, Susan Fairbairn took over the franchise.

“I’ve had some great successes with this. I’ve also had some lows,” said Fairbairn, executive director, Sylvan Learning. “But the program works. It makes a difference in a child’s life.”

Apr. 26—Small business owners know there’s a lot more to run a business their customers never see.

Proposed regulations would put the largest burden on small business

The US Supreme Court is considering a case on content moderation from both Texas and Florida that could offer clear guidelines on what entity is responsible for content moderation.

Many small businesses who use digital tools want to make sure they can communicate to their customers about their products without feeling like they must avoid hateful and harmful rhetoric online. Yet currently, the issue of who moderates what content is up for debate.

The US Supreme Court is considering a case on content moderation from both Texas and Florida that could offer clear guidelines on what entity is responsible for content moderation. Lower taxes, utility relief on the election wish list for Alberta small businesses

Affordability is one of the top priorities for Alberta small businesses as the province heads into an election next month, says a group that represents many entrepreneurs.

However, small business owners are anxious about those concerns that will not be addressed during the May election campaign.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) released the results of a new survey Tuesday showing while 95 per cent of Alberta small business owners intend to vote, just 16 per cent are “confident their concerns and priorities will receive attention.”

The CFIB says small business owners, like all Albertans, are struggling with the
