The finance minister requires Israel Discount Bank to spin off its credit card business

Israel Discount Bank Ltd., the nation’s fourth-largest lender, will need to divest its credit card business CAL as part of government policy to spur competition in the credit and banking sectors, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced on Thursday.

Smotrich said he decided to draft modified regulations that would require Discount Bank to sell its credit card business, which in turn would allow a new player to enter the overly concentrated credit market and lead to increased competition for households and small businesses.

“This step, combined with additional steps that we will take soon, will lead to a competitive credit market

Buying an investment property in Canada: Risks, taxes, regulations and lower-cost alternatives

Real estate is its own asset class, offering different attributes from equities and fixed income. As such, it can help diversify wealth. Investing in real estate does not require specialized expertise; most Canadians understand the basics of holding property through home ownership. Many have done very well due to home price appreciation over the past two decades.

Japan Finance Minister Warns of Severe Finances as BOJ Struggles to Contain Yields

TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan’s finances are becoming increasingly precarious, Finance Minister Shunichi Suzuki warned on Monday, just as markets test whether the central bank can keep interest rates ultra-low, allowing the government to service its debt.

Japan’s public debt is more than double its annual economic output, by far the heaviest burden in the industrialized world.

The government has been helped by near-zero bond yields, but bond investors have recently sought to break the Bank of Japan’s (BOJ) 0.5% cap on the 10-year bond yield, as inflation runs at 41-year highs, double the central the bank’s 2% target.

“Japan’s public

The S&P 500 (^GSPC) and the Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) both fell nearly 0.8%. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) declined nearly 1.0%.

Bond prices ticked down. The yield on the benchmark 10-year US Treasury note rose to 3.397% from 3.368% earlier this morning. The dollar index has declined over 10% after trading at its 20-year high in late September, per Bespoke Investment Group’s data.

Recently Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s former star finance minister, Bill Morneau, authored a book titled “Where To From Here, A Path to Canadian Prosperity”.

As is common when promoting a new book, Morneau has conducted several media interviews. What is less common is Morneau leveled some heavy and serious criticism against Trudeau and his office.

Morneau makes several allegations along a theme suggesting Trudeau often ignores or rejects “carefully considered calculations” for announcements that sound good or

The US debt ceiling fight is a potential ‘financial catastrophe’

Expect financial market and economic chaos to ensue if US lawmakers don’t find a resolution on the debt ceiling this time around.

Lawmakers took one step toward that scenario on Thursday.
