A large number of small businesses remain pessimistic and in a precarious financial position in February

Toronto, February 23, 2023 — Small business confidence remained steady in February, with a half point increase to 51.7 on the long-term optimism index, but still at its historical lowest outside of recessions, according to the latest Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) Business Barometer®.

“While confidence levels have improved slightly, they’re still below pre-pandemic levels. County looking for more support for Small Business Enterprise Centre

Huron County’s Director of Economic Development says they’re looking for an increase in provincial funding for their Small Business Enterprise Centre.

Vicki Lass says the center is funded partially by the county and partially by the province, and over the last few years there has not been an increase in funding from the province. So Small Business Enterprise Centers Ontario is petitioning the province for more funding for all of the centers in Ontario.

Federal small business dollars will build on existing Wisconsin efforts

In Minnesota, about $97 million will be targeted to investments in early-stage companies as well as loans and loan guarantees, all for small businesses.

Michigan will spread $237 million over direct equity-based capital investing as well as loans and loan guarantees, especially in the manufacturing and technology industry sectors with the potential to create high-wage jobs.
