High turnout expected amid tight security

Voting began at 7 a.m. on Thursday for the Bankipur Assembly seat in Bihar, drawing tight security measures and high interest. Around 3.80 lakh voters are eligible to cast ballots for 26 candidates, including Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor, who is making his electoral debut. The election takes place after the seat became vacant following the election of BJP national president Nitin Nabin to the Rajya Sabha in April.

Counting of votes is scheduled for August 3. The constituency, formerly known as Patna West, has been a BJP stronghold since 1995. Officials noted that all 422 polling booths are located in urban areas, according to data from the Election Commission.

BJP fields Neeraj Kumar Sinha to defend seat

Neeraj Kumar Sinha, the BJP’s youth wing leader, is contesting to retain the seat for the saffron party. The BJP has fielded Sinha after vacating the position following Nabin’s promotion to the Rajya Sabha. Nabin had won the Assembly seat for a fifth consecutive time in November, defeating RJD candidate Rekha Gupta by more than 50,000 votes.

The entry of Kishor has intensified the race. He launched the Jan Suraaj Party a few years ago and is now leading a significant challenge in a traditional BJP bastion. The NDA alliance has deployed almost all of its 201 MLAs for the campaign, signaling the high stakes involved for the ruling coalition.

Supporters for Kishor have reported being detained by police in the hours leading up to the vote. The former poll strategist claimed that more than 16 of his supporters were rounded up, though he stopped short of calling it an official arrest. He alleged that the detentions were carried out at the instance of higher-ups, forcing his team to chase the locations of the missing individuals across different police stations.

The alleged detentions have drawn criticism, with Kishor accusing the ruling party of fearing a loss. He argued that the misuse of administrative machinery cannot guarantee victory in the Bankipur Assembly seat. Police officials were not immediately available to comment on the allegations.
