Tamil Nadu conclave seals ₹67,542 crore deals

The Tamil Nadu government, led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam coalition, signed 97 memorandums of understanding worth over ₹67,542 crore at its first major investment event in Chennai on Thursday. The agreements, announced during the Vettri Tamil Nadu Investment Conclave 2026, aim to create more than 120,000 jobs across various sectors.

Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and Industries Minister S. Keerthana attended the gathering. Officials from Guidance, the state’s investment promotion agency, also participated. Keerthana stated that total investment commitments in the government’s first 100 days would surpass ₹1 lakh crore, averaging ₹1,000 crore daily since taking office.

Key investments across sectors

The Hinduja Group, established 111 years ago, promised ₹2,500 crore for renewable energy, electric mobility, and digital solutions projects. Its division, Hinduja Renewables Energy, plans to develop over 200 MW of solar, wind, and battery storage initiatives. The conglomerate’s plans also include expansions in automotive and financial services.

Daimler India Commercial Vehicles will invest ₹4,000 crore to expand its 400-acre facility in Oragadam for commercial vehicle design and manufacturing. French glass manufacturer Saint-Gobain committed ₹2,000 crore for a new plant in Krishnagiri and an expansion in Kancheepuram.

Japan’s YKK, the largest zipper producer globally, will build a ₹1,651 crore facility in Tiruvallur, generating 4,316 jobs. Singapore’s Ascendas Firstspace will develop a ₹1,000 crore industrial park in the same district, while U.S.-based Super Micro Computer will establish server assembly operations in Chennai.

Domestic companies played a significant role. Titan Company will invest ₹1,000 crore in Hosur to expand its watch, jewelry, and electronics automation facilities, adding 1,200 jobs. Lucas TVS, which manufactures automotive and EV components, pledged ₹2,500 crore across multiple locations.

Ramanathapuram, a district with little industrial activity, secured its first major project—a ₹1,000 crore investment from the Phoenix Kothari Group. Keerthana described the deal as progress toward spreading economic growth, allowing young people in the area to work closer to home.

Space tech and life sciences draw attention

Two space technology firms signed agreements. Agnikul Cosmos will invest ₹400 crore to set up assembly and integration operations for its reusable, liquid-propelled launch vehicles, creating 1,500 jobs. Skyroot Aerospace committed ₹250 crore for storage, assembly, and testing facilities, planning to employ 500 people.

The life sciences sector attracted eight companies. The Caplin Group will construct a ₹925 crore biologics and biosimilars research and manufacturing facility in Tiruvallur. S3V Vascular Technologies will invest ₹525 crore in Kancheepuram to produce cardiovascular and neurovascular implants, while Cellbios Healthcare & Lifesciences will spend ₹150 crore on specialized freezing bags for cell and gene therapy in Dindigul and Krishnagiri.

Keerthana linked the investments to a broader goal of reaching a $1.5 trillion economy by 2036. She explained that growth means different things to different people—better jobs for graduates, economic independence for women, confidence for entrepreneurs, and upward mobility for families.

Most projects are expected to begin within 18 months. However, timelines depend on regulatory approvals and land acquisition. The state government has pledged single-window clearances to speed up the process, though past agreements have sometimes faced delays due to bureaucracy or local opposition.

The event also demonstrated the government’s focus on balancing industrial expansion with social equity. Keerthana’s emphasis on Ramanathapuram reflected an effort to move beyond traditional hubs like Chennai and Coimbatore. While the outcome remains uncertain, the scale of commitments indicates investor confidence in Tamil Nadu’s future.

The figures stand out: 97 deals, ₹67,542 crore, and the potential for 120,000 jobs. The challenge lies in converting those pledges into operational facilities and employment opportunities.

In related developments, trained elephants were deployed in Parvathipuram to assist with similar regional growth efforts.
